Metal Earth Cinderella Castle, craft project

Finally, a craft update for you all. This one is a little different to my usual craft attempts. On my recent trip to Disneyworld I picked up a Metal Earth project. I had never heard of these before but I was intrigued. They all looked stunning on the pictures and I had to buy the Cinderella castle model. I did forget to take pictures of things before I started the project so I apologise for that, however I have taken one of the metal frame the pieces came from and the packaging.

I have never attempted anything like it. No glue or tools needed apparently. Utter rubbish! I needed tools. I used a pair of tweezers to manipulate the pieces and a scalpel to remove the bloody things from the frame. I also needed to used glue four times overall, mainly because I broke the tiny pieces when I became angry, but that’s not my fault! They’re small! A word of warning, the pieces are quite sharp so this kit is really not suitable for younger people. The packaging says 12+ but I know a few 12 year olds that wouldn’t be great with this so use caution. The instructions that come with the kit took a tiny amount of figuring out but that may just be because I don’t usually do this type of thing. They were really straight forward once I realised what the colours of the pieces meant. If they are in a certain colour that means there are more than one of that shape, so they are not just spares as I initially thought. Woops.

Anyways, its finished and honestly, I’m pretty proud of myself. It’s a bit lopsided in places and wobbly but look at it! It’s really pretty. It’s going on my newly cleared shelf that I am hoping to fill with things like it. I am looking at buying a few more of these as I did enjoy building it despite my frustration. I have my eye on a Star Trek Enterprise one as well as a great looking Tiger Tank. There are a lot of them that are available on Amazon, I even saw a few in Waterstones on my last visit. Price wise they are around £15 I think. This one was bought on site in Disney Florida so it was probably around $30, think they had a deal on if you bought two but I had a voucher that only covered one so I didn’t bother. A nice little project, doesn’t take long to complete, maybe a few hours for beginners like me. I probably took around 5-6hours to complete it.

And there we have it, a little crafty update. I’ve done a few other things which I’ll try and write about soon, but for now please let me know how you got on with these kits. Send photos! Would love to see the results. Also, to find out if I’m the only one that resorted to super glue.

Thanks for reading!

Harry Potter GeekGear August box review

As I love receiving subscription boxes I thought I would treat myself to a Harry Potter themed box. I don’t regret it in the slightest! This month’s box had a villain theme and cost £24.99. I’ve also realised that it’s cheaper if you subscribe for the box as it goes down to £19.99 per month. They also ship Worldwide as far as I’m aware! You can choose between two different boxes, a general Geek themed box which includes items from different Geeky backgrounds or a purely Harry Potter themed box as I did. When you look through the previous boxes that have been issued you can see that they consistently offer great value and so I wasn’t unhappy to place an order. You can select which house you belong to and the box will be themed according to this selection, I chose Ravenclaw, mainly because I really like blue, would probably be a Hufflepuff if I’m being honest with myself, but not a fan of the colour yellow.

I’ve contacted the site a few times in regards to codes available either for myself or that I can offer to my readers (there’s a code at the bottom!) and have found the staff very friendly to deal with. They do however give out very generic responses and it feels a bit like I’m talking to a polite computer when I get a message back from them. They also didn’t give me much information to include for you all. I could write a 5-page message and I’d get a few sentences back in return. This could be improved if you ask me. I didn’t write an email that long, just so you know!

The packaging of the box was brilliant, it’s wrapped in a plastic envelope and the box inside is designed like a crate. This crate was decorated in multiple little Harry Potter images. Very nice box. The items inside were wrapped really well, the bottle of Butterscoth butterbeer was a little overwrapped if you ask me. Lots of bubble wrap. At least it arrived in one piece though. The drink itself tastes a bit like melted caramel ice-cream which was a little overly sweet for me and the family but we shared it between us and enjoyed the novelty of it. Just wouldn’t be able to have a whole bottle to myself. This is an alcohol free drink and the labels are designed in a way that it looks like you’ve purchased it from a Harry Potter themed establishment. The Flying Cauldron label was perfect. I drank it from the very well made little Three Broomsticks half a pint glass tankard that also came in the box. I love this glass, just have to avoid putting it in my dishwasher so it stays looking like I’ve been drinking in Harry Potter land. These products really match this boxes them which was a ‘Three Broomsticks’ theme, next month’s teaser image is a Dark Mark so I can’t wait to see what’s in it!

One piece of packaging that was a bit over the top was the cardboard snitch box. This is a fairly decent size that I would expect to see something the size of the tankard come out of, instead you get a nice little snitch necklace that opens to show a clock face.

It’s a nice enough necklace but it was a bit out of place coming from that box. It also seems a little bit cheap, something I could have purchased from Claire’s accessory and whilst I like the idea, I wasn’t overly amazed. I think I would have preferred it if it had been a bracelet or on a shorter chain. I’ve since been told that it’s actually a pocket watch which explains the length, I still think I’ll take it off the chain and just keep it in my pocket for work.

In every box you will receive a uniquely designed T-shirt that is made by this company and not sold in stores. In this box it is a Disney castle logo that shows Hogwarts instead of Cinderella’s castle. It fits perfectly and is really soft and comfortable. I really love it and will be taking it to Disney with me when I go next year. My only downside is that it’s white, I’m a bit too pale to get away with wearing white without looking a bit washed out. It won’t stop me wearing it though!

The box included paper replicas of the Knights bus ticket and a train ticket for Platform 9¾. These were nice little additions but not really very useful, I like things to have a bit more of a purpose, although I can always pin them to my board along with the Ravenclaw flag that I received in the box. Could have a Harry Potter themed board when I get back to my student accommodation.

Whilst I liked but disliked some of the items I received I still loved the box. The excitement of receiving such unique Harry Potter themed items was worth every penny and I think I’ll subscribe to get the box every month. I really did love it and recommend it to everyone. Just buy it as a one off box if you prefer, that way you can try it out and see how you feel. Choose your house, and join the community.

Don’t forget to share your selfie with the items in order to enter a prize draw, I took two but my favourite is this one by far:  #ILOVEGEEKGEAR! IMG_1599

The next box is themed ‘Future’ which is perfect as it coincides with my return to University. I’ll be putting my order in this weekend and eagerly anticipating the last week of September. If you guys also wish to place an order, then you can use the code NEWSUB10 and get 10% off your first purchase. The link for the site is: http://www.geekgearbox.co.uk/
